For the first time in history, a Uruguayan has a direct chance of entering a CT
Matías Nóbrega competes this weekend for the Rottnest Island wildcard
Uruguayan Matías Nóbrega, a La Paloma local and member of his country's national team on more than one occasion, will have a historic direct chance this weekend to get into a first division event in world surfing.
By finishing first in the qualifiers, which are expected to take place this weekend in Margaret River, Nóbrega will qualify for the event.
The palomino has been living in Western Australia for over a year and has been a semi-finalist in the last three events he has competed in in his region, which is home to some of the best surfers on the planet.
“I feel good, motivated, energetic and physically fit. I won three championships this month and my surfing felt good and it was noticeable. I won a series of 17 points in the first championship and in the rest of them I didn’t go below 13,” Nóbrega told DUKE.
And he added: “The important thing is to have fun and that is what I am going to this championship as well. I would love to reach the final and get into Rottnest, but, step by step, there are still two days left, so for now I am thinking about the waves that I will surf in a little while.”
To qualify for the A event of world surfing, the Uruguayan will have to beat several of the best in the area where he lives, such as Jacob Willcox, Jay Davies and Kael Walsh, among others.
Having a good result at an international event is nothing new for Nóbrega. The Uruguayan was top 8 at the ISA Junior World Championships in Ecuador in 2014.
The Australian leg of the tour consists of four stops: Newcastle, Narrabeen, Margaret River and Rottnest Island.
The stage in which the Uruguayan is competing will take place between May 16 and 26.
