Gabiel Medina and Italo Ferreira do not want to continue competing in Margaret

The shark attack situation in the area has scared the world number 1 and former world champion

Both Italo Ferreira and Gabriel Medina have spoken out against continuing to compete in the Margaret River Pro because they say they do not feel safe due to the two shark attacks that took place near the main event site.

“Today there were two shark attacks on beaches close to where we are competing. I don’t feel safe training and competing in that place, at any moment something could happen to one of us. I hope not, but I’ll give my opinion before it’s too late,” Medina wrote on Instagram.

Meanwhile, Italo Ferreira said basically the same thing: It's very dangerous, don't you think? They keep insisting on doing stages where the risk of having an accident is 90%. And then I ask myself: Is the safety of the athletes not a priority? There have already been several alerts, life is worth more! I hope it doesn't happen to any of us. I don't feel comfortable training and competing in a place like that."

Following the initial suspension on Monday, WSL Commissioner Jessi Miley Dyer said the number of skis and drones in the area had been increased.

The WSL also issued a statement saying that “athlete safety is a priority.”

For the JBay event in South Africa, where Mick Fanning was attacked, Gabriel Medina had already spoken out against the lack of security he feels he has competing there.

Two shark attacks were reported early Monday morning and later in the afternoon, One of them was an Argentine citizen, Alejandro Travaglini. and the second to a Dane. The first suffered leg injuries and was rushed to hospital and operated on there. The second was treated on the spot without further incident.
