Gabriel Villarán: “We want the WSL to return to Pico Alto”

The Pico Alto International press conference was held, the series and more details of the tournament were presented

“We want the WSL to return to Pico Alto, Punta Hermosa deserves it,” said Gabriel Villaran, and with those words he closed a very entertaining and at times emotional press conference that launched the return of an international event to the surf city south of Lima after four years.

To do this, Gabriel said, and was supported by Gary Linden, the founder of the World Big Wave Tour and here acting as event director, they will try to generate consistency in the tournament, trying to make the event happen year after year. “It is better to have it happen, even if it is not big, than not to have it happen,” Linden said.

The event is scheduled to begin on Saturday at 8:00, with four heats of six, then two semis and a final. According to reports, the swell will increase throughout the day; it will start slowly and reach its peak by the end of the afternoon.

In this regard, the possibility is being considered that if the storm surge takes a while, part of the event will take place tomorrow and the other part on Sunday.

The series are as follows:
1: Alvaro Malpartida vs Cristian Merello vs Bradley Norris vs Geronimo Castagneto vs Luis Gomez vs Alonso Correa
2: Torrey Meister vs Jaime Venegas vs Cristobal de Col vs Ignacio Salazar vs Joaquin del Castillo vs Sebastian Gomez
3: Jojo Roper vs Alejo Loret de Molla vs Ramon Navarro vs Joaquin Coloma vs Luca Padua vs Gustavo Swayne
4: José Gómez vs Nahuel Amalfitano vs Coco Nogales vs Carlos Mario Zapata vs Joaquín Castagneto vs Sebastián Correa

One of the guests who attended the conference was Ramón Navarro, who a few weeks ago surfed one of the most incredible waves in the history of the sport in Fiji. The Chilean explained that the important thing about a big wave event for the competitors is to ride the waves and have a good time. He recalled that the first tournament held in 2009 in Todos Santos had a bottle of Tequila as a prize; he stressed that the importance is to be in the giant sea among brothers.
