Legendary Peruvian surfer Gabriel Villarán, former Pan American champion, ISA medalist, top player on the world big wave tour (among many other achievements in a long resume) has just launched a series of training camps for young people aged 13 to 19, which seek to bring out the best in each surfer in an all-round way; focusing on all areas of the sport.
Together with professionals such as Olympic coach and ISA world champion, Gabriel Aramburú, physical trainer and also ISA gold medalist, Renato Quezada and rescue and safety specialist, Rodrigo Jímenez, the High Performance Surf Camp by Gabriel Villarán will have three parts:
Camp 1: Core Surfing – May 6-8
Camp 2: Big Wave Surfing – July 1-3
Camp 3: Pro Surfing November 25th and 27th

The first will have the support of world champion Sofía Mulanovich, the second will have the support of Eddie Aikau finalist Ramón Navarro and the third will have the support of Peruvian super professional Miguel Tudela.
“It is a program that aims to reach the maximum potential of the athlete considering the specific needs of each surfer, directed in three camps according to their needs: Basic Core Surfing, Big Wave Surfing and Pro Surfing. Our mission is to achieve a rapid evolution in athletes, solidifying the foundations of surfing and enhancing the skills of each one focusing on both body and mind,” they detail in the presentation (see below).
“In my professional career I have also done many training camps for young people, such as Red Bull's Future Camps, and I have been able to see that they generate an important life experience, they mark a before and after,” Villarán told DUKE about the launch of his camps.
"The motivation is positive, contagious and pushes you to give your best"
He added: “We did one a long time ago in Costa Rica with Reb Bull, in Peru, in Sri Lanka, and you could see a bit of the experience, as if we were on those trips to the World Cups where you are going to represent your country. You are representing, you are living with the other guys for several days, so the motivation is positive, contagious and pushes you to give your best.”
Villarán said that he is motivated to contribute his grain of sand and do so in a professional manner “with all the tools, not only for surfing, but also psychologically.”
“We are incorporating a course on rescue and safety, sports psychology, training, nutrition, environmental responsibility, among others. I believe that kids, today, with all the information we have at hand, can evolve faster. And that is what this camp is for: To correctly learn and have everything necessary to be either a freesurfer looking to improve their surfing or to focus on kids who want to be professionals,” he said.
Each of the camps will feature the expert eye, providing surfing training and subsequent video analysis, talks on equipment selection, skate sessions to improve positioning for certain movements, competition simulation, training and nutrition advice, safety and rescue advice, and environmental education.
