Gold Coast beaches closed to surfers today

Kirra, Snappers and Burleigh tubes, among others, will roll solo

One of the last remaining open-air surfing meccas in the world, Gold Coast waves such as Snapper Rocks, Kirra and Burleigh Head are closed to the public from today, the WSL said on its website.

The decision was made by local authorities who saw how, despite the rules of social distancing, the sea continued to gather crowds.

"Unfortunately, over the weekend, people from out of town descended on the Gold Coast in droves and I fear this number will increase over the Easter weekend," Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate said. "As a result, all beaches at The Spit, Surfers Paradise and Coolangatta will be closed on Tuesday."

The authorities clarified that the coast will be patrolled and that the necessary measures will be taken to prevent people from going into the water.

"No  “I wanted to make this decision but what happened over the weekend showed me that people visiting from Brisbane are not listening to us (…) I will close more beaches if people believe this is not real,” added Tate.

According to health officials, the established restrictions will remain in place for the next few months.
