The European qualification for Paris 2024 in the men's category will be decided tomorrow, Wednesday, the final day of the Surf City El Salvador ISA World Surfing Games, in a kill or die between Gonzalo Guitierrez of Spain and Kauli Vaast of France.
The two will face each other in the 11th round of the playoffs, which will also include Reo Inaba and Cody Young.
The competition could go all the way to the grand final of the Surf City El Salvador ISA World Surfing Games; both could make it past the 11th and then after the 12th go to the grand final and determine the European men's slot in the grand final of the world championship.
Gutierrez has been quietly making his way through his heats, advancing to round 3 of the main event where he placed fourth and then, from repechage 4 onwards, he has advanced to seven heats.
Gonzalo, who arrived at the World Cup in El Salvador as a teammate of former CT Aritz Aranburu and Challengers member Adur Amatriain, went much further than his compatriots in the tournament.
On his Instagram, Gonzalo says he is “a surfer from Cantabria, a psychology student and something else.”
Tomorrow he will have his chance to be an Olympian.
