The news that the WSL has expanded the number of women from 18 to 24 and is now close to the 32 men that make up the Championship Tour should be applauded, but we must not forget to say that it is not enough and that equality is not achieved.

In the corridors of the WSL, in the WhatsApp groups of its executives, there will be an explanation somewhere as to why a gradual step was taken and not a total one, but the reality is that it was about time for it to be total and even more so considering that the change will be in 2026.

If we talk so strongly about equality in 2024, how strongly will we do so in 2026? If it is ridiculous today that the number of women in the CT is lower today, how much more will it seem to us in 2026?

And I don't want to tarnish all the good things about it with comments about what's bad. The reality is that there will be two more CS qualifiers every year (Nadia would have qualified if the change was for 2025) and four more will be maintained through the tour.

It makes the whole chain of dreams a little more attainable, a little bit, right? That thing about five people coming in every year was crazy, and seven is still crazy, but a lesser crazy thing.

And this is the main point: As long as we do not have a plausible goal for women at the highest level (along with the Olympic Games - which are truly equal), more women will continue to leave the tour at the age of competition and fewer will take the risk of continuing to compete.

It is true that this injection will be accompanied in the Challengers with a greater following of its surfers and that surely this will also trickle down to the QSs, the prize is now bigger, but it fell eight places short.

If we talk about equality, it has to be real and not just lip service.

Hopefully by the time CS 2025 starts (which will be later in the year because they moved the cutoff), they change their minds and everything will be equal, pay, quantity, etc.… 32 men and 32 women.
