Grant Baker and Keala Kennelly are now world champions of big waves
The WSL did not make a call for Mavericks and thus, without announcing it, consecrated the South African and the Hawaiian. Natxo González finished fifth and was guaranteed on the 2019-2020 tour
South African Grant “Twiggy” Baker and Hawaiian Keala Kennelly are the new big wave world champions, as the WSL did not, as required by the regulations, make the call to the Mavericks tournament 72 hours before the event was supposed to start. The championship will not take place and the rankings show them as the first two.
Baker won the Nazaré Challenge and placed fifth in the Jaws Challenge (where he surfed one of the most incredible paddle-out waves in history), with that he added 16.305 points that were unreachable by the rest of the competitors. The closest to him was Billy Kemper who added 13345.
Basque Natxo González finished his return to the world big wave tour in fifth place and will thus reclassify for the 2019-2020 version.
On the women's side, Keala Kennelly, who won the Jaws Challenge, took home this year's title. Brazilian Andrea Moller came in second and Hawaiian Emily Erickson in third.
