Harrison Roach's journey after hitting his head on the board

What seemed like a minor injury ended up being a fractured skull, various surgeries, six months out of the water and finally the happy return

Former world longboard champion Harrison Roach had an interesting journey after hitting his head on his board in what initially appeared to be a minor accident.

But as he shared on social media a few days ago, the blow led to a more serious situation: "My skull was fractured, my right frontal sinus cavity was fractured, and I had air in my brain. In April, I had brain surgery: They cut me from ear to ear, peeled my face off, opened a window in my skull, and removed the bone before reattaching everything with a few pieces of titanium and 58 staples."

“After the operation, I had some bleeding; a week later it worsened, and I had a surgical sponge inserted (…) Although I've been tempted to flood your feed with context-free hospital posts over the past six months, I thought I'd wait so I could share a happy ending, which came this week with the approval of the neurology team,” he added.

“I know a surfing injury isn't a big deal with what's going on in the world right now (and rightfully so), but for me it was. So, take this longish description as my cathartic exercise in closing the topic. And if anyone has Gath's guy's number, I'm looking for a helmet,” he concluded.
