Hawaii bans sale of most sunscreens

Today, some 3500 products containing oxybenzone are damaging the coral reefs surrounding the island.

Hawaii may become the first place in the world to ban the sale of sunscreens containing oxybenzone, the local newspaper reported. Star advertiserAccording to several scientific studies, this component, widely used in sunscreens, is very harmful to coral reefs.

Last week, the state government voted in favor of the law that dictates the measure and with this, as of the first day of 2021, what is now estimated to be 3500 products with this component cannot be sold.

However, the measure had some detractors, first of all the Hawaii Medical Association, which told the aforementioned newspaper that there was not enough scientific evidence to make the decision in question.

"Hawaii is definitely being innovative in banning these dangerous chemicals in sunscreen. When you think about it, our island paradise, surrounded by coral reefs, is the perfect place to set the path for the world to follow," said the bill's sponsor, Senator Mike Gabbard.
