Hawaiian authorities proclaimed January 25 as Luke Shepardson Day
"There is no doubt that Eddie would be proud," wrote Honolulu Mayor Rick Blangiardi.

January 25 will now be Luke Shepardson Day, Honolulu, Oahu, Hawaii Mayor Rick Blangiardi proclaimed on an official plaque given to Luke that was shared by the surfer's family on social media.
The decision was made based on several factors in favor of the 27-year-old Hawaiian lifeguard, including the fact that he has already saved several lives on the North Shore in his lifeguarding career that began in 2019, that he, like Eddie Aikau, the first North Shore lifeguard, shared the dedication to his craft and to big waves, and that the young man won the championship, among other things.
“I declare January 25th to be Luke Shepardson Day (…) In recognition of the inspiration and pride that Luke provided, not only to surfers and his fellow surfers but to the entire community, the rest of the city staff and the spectators who watched the event around the world. Riding big waves takes courage and riding them to save the lives of strangers takes heart. There is no doubt that Eddie would be proud,” concludes the plaque signed by the authority.
Luke Shepardson won the 10th edition of the Eddie last Sunday while on duty in Waimea as a local lifeguard.
In the final score he scored 89,1 out of 90 total points.
