High-performance sports in Australia receive US$35 million from the government and surfing is grateful

An interesting portion goes to Surfing Australia; its officials say they are now relieved to be able to move forward with their development strategies in the midst of the Covid crisis.

The Australian government has invested approximately US$35 million to be “distributed across the sports in the high performance system,” announced the Minister for Sport, the Hon Richard Colbeck, as reported by Surfing Australia, the governing body for sport in the country.

In a year of few uncertainties, the ministry and the sports institute worked together with the national organization of high-performance sports to provide stability in the face of complexity.

The report does not detail how much surfing will receive, but it is known that it receives reasonable amounts. At the beginning of 2019, it was revealed that the expanded high-performance center had been expanded with contributions of seven million dollars from the government.

Chris Mater, CEO of Surfing Australia, said: “We have seen how Covid has had a negative impact on all industries and communities and for us, representatives of the sport, things have not gone well either” and thanked the authorities.

“There is a feeling of relief now for our high-performance program and the entire network that supports it to be able to continue implementing the development of the high-performance strategy,” he added.

Australia has four athletes already qualified for the Olympic Games: Steph Gilmore, Julian Wilson, Owen Wright and Sally Fitzgibbons.
