Historic: Carlos Muñoz got into the CT 2022
Australian Kalani Ball did not win the Haleiwa Challenger and the last available spot went to the Costa Rican
In an absolutely dramatic way, Costa Rican Carlos Muñoz achieved his lifelong dream of entering the elite of world surfing, the World Surf League Championship Tour.
Muñoz started the day with five surfers able to beat him and two spots available. After the quarterfinals took place, it was determined that Samuel Pupo, Jackson Baker and Joao Chianca qualified.
They join the previously announced places occupied by Callum Robson, Liam O'Brien, Connor O'Leary, Lucca Mesinas, Nat Young, Imaikalani Devault, Jake Marshall and Ezekiel Lau.
Since Billy Stairmand, Ian Gentil and Jacob Willcox lost, the situation was presented in the way that if Kalani Ball won the event, he would qualify and if he did not win, Carlos Muñoz would qualify.
The Australian surfed his semi-final series very well but came up against an inspired Samuel Pupo and another inspired Kanoa Igarashi who outclassed him and knocked him out of the event.
This gave the Costa Rican the classification.
With this, in a historic way, there will be two Latin Americans on the 2022 tour, Muñoz and Mesinas.
