“I am not at the level I want and need to compete”
Kelly explained why he says he is injured, he can surf, but he still doesn't compete
In an Instagram post from Fiji, the best surfer in history, Kelly Slater, explained that he is not in Bali competing in the CT competition because he is not at the level he wants and needs.
“Yeah, I surfed a really good wave today,” Slater said. “I went straight without any problems and saw hundreds and hundreds of other good waves. When I’m ready and properly healed and able to compete with the best in the world, I will. Good luck to everyone in Bali at the WSL event.”
Slater had competed in the Founders' Cup, an event held in the pool he created, and performed maneuvers and put in as many tubes as he wanted. For the next stage, in Rio de Janeiro, he declared himself injured. For the next stage, in Bali, he initially confirmed his presence, but then was listed as "injured."
In the swell of the year in Fiji on Sunday, Slater took a wave and got a great paddle out on a day when most of the surfers were towing.
A few months ago Kelly had said that she was going to return to Jeffreys Bay, everything indicates that this will be the case.
