The International Olympic Committee has once again given the OK to surfing, saying yes to Paris' recommendation that the sport be included in the Olympic Games to be held there in 2024.

The 134th IOC Session, the highest meeting of the body where decisions like this are made, was held today in Lausanne, Switzerland.

According to the ISA press release, final ratification will be carried out by the IOC Executive Board, after the sport makes its long-awaited debut at the Tokyo 2020 Games.

“Today’s announcement moves Surfing even closer to long-term Olympic inclusion,” the statement said.

“This is another amazing day for Olympic surfing as we move closer to Paris 2024 and long-term Olympic inclusion,” said ISA President Fernando Aguerre. “I would like to personally thank the IOC Members and the Paris 2024 Organising Committee for believing in our sport and recognising the values it brings. We are humbled and honoured by the trust placed in us.”

“In Tokyo we have the opportunity to showcase to the world the unique, youthful personality of surfing and its socially engaged athletes and to strengthen our position within the Movement. Our Olympic Surfing Festival promises to be a truly innovative element to the programme, showcasing our vibrant culture. I am optimistic that, together with our partners in Tokyo, we can bring a new, dynamic, youthful attraction and leave a long-term legacy for Japan, for the Games and for our sport,” he added.

Paris 2024 has announced a public tender process for the selection of the host site for Surfing. The process will be conducted in coordination with the ISA and the French Surfing Federation. It will start immediately with the expression of interest. It will include a technical evaluation and site visits in July and August, with the aim of announcing the host site in December 2019.

The communes that officially presented themselves to host the surfing event are Biarritz in association with the Landes (Capbreton, Hossegor and Seignosse); Lacanau and La Torche (Finistère).
