“I think the most special thing was the Surf Ranch”

Noe Mar McGonagle released a new video, he was at Slater's pool and here he shares the whole experience

Noe Mar McGonagle released his new film, Buscando Pura Vida, last week and it shows him surfing perfect waves around the world.

With a few changes this year, he landed a dream job in the Maldives, teaching surf lessons and catching a swell where he rode some great tubes almost alone. Apparently, these lessons also earned him an undeniable invitation to surf at the Surf Ranch with a few people and catch about 40 of Kelly Slater's much-loved waves.

In the following paragraphs he briefly shares about the film, which will be released in the coming days, and about surfing in the best wave pool known to date.

How would you present your new film?
My new film, which is coming out this week on social media, in its entirety on Vimeo and Youtube, is basically my 2018. I went surfing in some pretty exotic places, so I think the video has a good variety of waves.

How would you summarize the experience?
The video experience was very special. And I think the most special thing was the Surf Ranch, right? It was a very fun trip.

How did you get to go? Who invited you?
I was able to go to the Surf Ranch at the invitation of a client who was giving him surf lessons. He invited me with some friends.

How many waves were you able to surf?
At the Surf Ranch there are 120 waves a day, I couldn't even tell you how many waves, but definitely around 40. You catch the waves from the beginning, but there are like four other people waiting in different places in case you fall. Full waves, completely full waves, maybe 20. Maybe another 20 but only half or a little less than half.

What are the nerves like before the first wave? What was that one like?
I was really nervous on my first wave. In fact, I think I fell on several of my first waves, I didn't manage to complete them. The wave isn't that easy, it's a little different than the ocean, but after surfing half a day in the pool you get the hang of it and it's very easy. Basically you already know what the wave is going to be and where. It doesn't take long, but the first couple of waves are a little weird.

Describe what your best wave was like.
My best wave was one of the last ones. It was a right hander where I surfed two incredibly long barrels that I could barely breathe in the barrel and I managed to get out. It was so amazing and I was actually so excited about the barrel that when I got out I fell because I couldn't believe it.

How have you been? You didn't go to Hawaii but you're on the list for Noronha, how are you looking forward to the year?
I decided not to go to Hawaii to focus on Fernando de Noronha and Australia since they are 6.000 events and Hawaii is only 3.000. My budget is pretty low right now, so I decided to save that money and invest it for the other events coming up. I'm going all in for Fernando and Australia.

How are negotiations going to find a main sponsor?
The situation with sponsors is very difficult right now. I am now receiving some support from the Costa Rican Government in preparation for Lima, for the Pan American Games, which is helping me with the QS as well. So there I am, but I am definitely hoping to find a main sponsor so I can go to all the QS dates.

Noe Mar will be competing in fewer events this year, in a few days he will be seen in Fernando de Noronha. "The situation with sponsors is very difficult right now.
