ISA Executive Committee proposes limiting mandates to three terms

The motion will be voted on by the national federations at the Annual General Meeting of the organization that changed its agenda for El Salvador 2021; until now, the positions could be re-elected indefinitely.

The executive committee of the International Surfing Association met remotely and decided to limit all positions elected by the vote of the institution's member federations, namely president and vice presidents, to three terms, the organization reported in a press release.

Until now, these positions had no re-election limit; the ISA president himself was re-elected eight times during his mandate (he is currently serving his ninth term and has been president since 1994).

The proposal must be approved at the annual general meeting, which was postponed until the World Cup in El Salvador in May 2021.

According to information provided to DUKE by the ISA press department, once the measure takes effect, officials who have already been re-elected several times will have their re-election possibilities extended to a maximum of three terms.

Peruvian Karín Sierralta, who is vice president, has already served three terms in office;  could, if the proposal is approved, reach a maximum of six re-elections and new candidates have a maximum of 12 years to occupy their positions.

The Zoom meeting was attended by: Vice President Casper Steinfath (DEN), ISA CEO Robert Fasulo (USA), Translator Miyabe, Regular Member Jean-Luc Arassus (FRA), Other Regular Member Atsushi Sakai (JPN), President Fernando Aguerre (ARG), Vice President Barbara Kendall (NZL), Vice President Karín Sierralta (PER), Athletes' Commissioner Justine Dupont (FRA) and Vice President Kirsty Coventry (ZIM).

Other measures that were subject to approval at the annual general meeting are:

-Include the values of non-discrimination, gender equality, cultural tolerance and peaceful relations between nations and people in the core objectives of the ISA Constitution; (to be confirmed at the 2021 RGA).

- Strengthen the credibility of the electoral process by guaranteeing a secret vote for all elections, regardless of the number of candidates.

-Evaluate and approve an athlete protection policy.

On the other hand, the ISA's victory over the canoeing federation before the CAS was celebrated and the commitment was confirmed that SUP will be present in as many multi-sport events as possible, including the Olympic Games, as Aguerre himself reported in an interview with the Portuguese federation last month.

ISA President Fernando Aguerre said, as published in the statement: “My colleagues and I at the EC are united around our long-term goals of having surfing as a permanent sport on the Olympic programme until Los Angeles 2028 and beyond, as well as the inclusion of SUP in the Games programme.”
