The International Surfing Association is in advanced negotiations with Puerto Rico for the country to host the 2024 World Surfing Games, the last qualifying stop for Paris 2024, reported ISA President Fernando Aguerre and local newspaper Primera Hora.

“We are already in negotiations with the Puerto Rican organizing committee to return with a major world championship, probably the most important world championship. We hope to announce the news before the end of the year and we are very, very happy to be able to return because we believe that Puerto Rico has a bright future as a surfing destination,” Aguerre said in a recorded message that was broadcast during the closing ceremony of the SUP and Paddleboard World Championships.

This not so concrete message about which of the world championships it could be, although it is known that on the road to Paris 2024 the world championship of the same year is the one that ends up having more relevance, confirmed that it would be the World Surfing Games through the media Primera Hora, which detailed that it is a shortboard world championship and that it will qualify for Paris 2024, citing the president of the Puerto Rican surfing federation, Óscar Martinez.

According to the newspaper, “the wave proposed for the World Shortboard Championship is the one that rises on the outskirts of Arecibo, in the town centre. That is the wave where the Margara Open for shortboarding and bodyboarding is held.”

The waves of Isabela, Aguadilla and Rincón were also proposed.

The option makes sense for what will be the qualification for the Olympic Games that will be held in the feared Teahupoo.
