ISA seeks to reduce to five the number of qualifiers through the CT for LA 2028

Limiting the number of surfers per country who qualify through the league to one, and increasing the number who qualify through the World Surfing Games, was reported by the Brazilian media outlet AOS Mídia.

The ISA is in negotiations to lower the number of Olympic qualifiers through the CT to five men and five women with a limit of one surfer per country, contrasting with the 10 and eight of the previous process, reported the Brazilian media AOS Mídia on its IG based on sources.

“The information obtained indicates that the national federations have already been informed of the proposal. However, to date, there is no official confirmation from the ISA itself nor of any eventual approval by the International Olympic Committee,” AOS says.

The eight spots in question would become part of the ISA World Surfing Games. In other words, of the 24 spots for men and 24 for women, five would be from the WSL and 19 from ISA events.

On the other hand, the Brazilian media outlet mentions that the CT schedule could be used in the same year as the Games, which take place from July 14th to 30th. If it were this year, it would go up to event six, which is in June in Saquarema.

“The information is still being debated and depends on your approval,” says AOS.

The underlying reason for the change could very well be the lack of motivation among CT athletes to participate in ISA events, where they end up achieving mediocre results because they are forced to participate.

If it is limited to two per country and the first qualifier is the ISA without knowing what will happen the following year in the WSL, the motivation for the best in the world to give their all in ISA events is greater because they will seek to guarantee themselves a place in the Games no matter what.
