Today, one of the last swells of the season has reached the Basque coast. The conditions were very nice, with good visibility and almost no wind.

For this reason Ibon Amatriain, The pioneer of giant waves in the Basque Country wanted to give his son Iker the opportunity to try his hand at Playa Gris. It was the first time in the life of the young and talented 17-year-old goofy that he surfed Playa Gris and also practiced tow-in..

When he came out of the water he said that he was calm because he was with the best teacher, and that's how he looked, very relaxed., with a lot of flow.

If there's anyone good at showing you the way at Playa Gris, that's Ibon Amatriain, who surfed there when there were no jet skis, no life jackets, no cameras. The father must have been proud of his "little one" after the session. All photos: Ritxi Goya
When he got out of the water he said he was calm because he was with the best teacher, and that's how he looked, very relaxed, with a lot of flow. "I knew my father wasn't going to throw me into any that would close," said Iker.

“It was the session with the biggest waves of my life, I think. Without a doubt, it will be a session I will never forget,” said Iker, “The best wave was one where I went really deep with a cutback at the beginning and then the foam almost swallowed me up but I managed to do it.”

"I felt super safe the whole time because my dad knows that wave really well and he knew I wasn't going to go into any that were going to close." Asked if he'd gotten a taste for the bigger conditions, he said: "When we were in the water we were just talking about that, that we'd appreciate it if it was a little bit bigger."

He did have to pay, though, and he got one in the head. He said he told his father to leave so as not to risk the bike, as there was not enough time to carry out the rescue.

He said that this “food” was good for him because he got over it easily and it left him calm.

It must not be easy to leave your son in a situation like that. But it was Iker himself who told the father to go calmly and not do rescue work in order to take care of the motorcycle. The "food" gave him more confidence, he said.
