Imanol Yeregi: “We were able to enjoy one of the best right-wingers in the world”
Interview with the surfer who captured Morocco epically and tomorrow releases his new video exclusively for DUKE
The young Basque Imanol Yeregi saw that a solid swell was travelling towards northwest Africa and decided, together with four friends, to get on the first plane and add tubes to feed the heart.
The planning went perfectly and that can be seen in the video that premieres tomorrow exclusively on DUKE. Meanwhile, this is what the surfer himself said about his trip:
How did this trip come about? Did you see the swell and set off or was it already planned beforehand?
This trip came about suddenly, when we saw the storm that was forming for the whole of Europe. We were thinking of going to Portugal but in the end the winds were better for North Africa and we decided two days before the swell to go there. It was a last minute trip and there was a bit of pressure to catch flights and everything.
That right looks amazing, please describe it.
That morning when we arrived to see the line up I was silent for a moment, taking in how good the wave is. I would describe it as fast, beautiful, tough and long.

How did the days go by?
I surfed the first two days, which were the best days of the swell, about six to seven hours a day. I surfed early in the morning, to take advantage of the low tide and at the last minute, when the tide went out again, we went back in.
The first day of the swell was the biggest but the second was smaller but more perfect, and when it went away, we had fun one meter waves and we were able to scratch out some more swims.
What was your best wave of the trip?
The best wave of my trip, I think, was a tube that I entered from the peak and I advanced a good stretch of the wave on the inside where I finally had no way out, but it was a very hard wave and the view it gave me from the inside was incredible.
It was difficult to find the good one or it was one after the other.
The first day was not easy at all, there were waves that connected the whole wave but others were sectioned and left you halfway. The second day was easier for everyone because it was under the sea and there was less current.
What board did you use on the days of the tube? Did you switch to a step up or did you keep the measurements of a normal day?
I changed boards from the morning of the swell to midday. The sea started to drop a lot and I had to leave the 6'6 I was using and take my 6'4 Peter Daniels Pukas model for smaller and square tubes. Afterwards I was surfing with a 5'10 Pukas the last two days of the swell, when there was only a metre of waves.

How about the culture? The local ambiance in the video looks amazing.
The culture shock was one of the things that struck me the most about the trip. I thought there wouldn't be that much change being so close to us, but the culture is totally different and I loved spending four days seeing their customs, food, etc.
To sum up, what was the best part of the trip?
The best part of the trip was that we were four friends together and we were able to enjoy one of the best right-handers in the world; for me that is priceless these days. I hope to repeat a trip like that again.
And the worst?
We arrived at Marrakech airport at 12 at night and the vehicle we had rented to go to the wave was missing. We had to stay there for a couple of hours and arrived very late at the wave site. It was the worst moment of the trip because we were tired, but everything else was great.
