In an emotional video, Alejo Muñiz announced that he will retire after the 2026 CT tournament.

“I don’t know how this last year is going to end, but I know how I want to live it: Giving 100% as I always have,” he said.

With an emotional video, Argentine and Brazilian Alejo Muñiz announced that 2026 will be his last year on the CT, he said on his Instagram and that of the WSL.

“I don’t know how this last year is going to end, but I know how I want to live it: Giving 100% as I always have,” is one of the things he mentions in the video in which Kelly, Medina, Taj Burrow and part of Muñiz’s family participate.

“I’ve never been so present, so aware, and so grateful to still be here. I have a whole year ahead of me, 12 championships to compete in, to feel every set, every trip, every wave as if it were the first,” he added.

“And if in those last 20 years of competing, I managed to inspire someone or someone to start over, then it makes sense; there are phases that end, but history continues to be written,” he concludes.

Messages of affection abound in the comments and in the video itself.

After a strong start on the CT between 2011 and 2016, it took Muñiz nine years to return to the elite. He finally achieved some success on the CS in 2024 and was the last player to qualify through the elite in 2025.

At 35 years old, he faces his last round-the-world race as a CT competitor.
