Reigning world champion Italo Ferreira has said he is likely to be in Nazaré tomorrow to surf the biggest swell of the season and what many say is the biggest to hit Europe in years.

During the live broadcast that Gigantes de Nazaré is doing, Ferreira appeared to say hello, the host Maira Pabst asked if he would go to surf the swellazo and he confirmed that he will be there tomorrow, pointing out that he needs a board.

Later, he was interviewed by telephone and the Brazilian played down his plan, saying that he has not ruled out the idea, that he will travel along the coast looking for perfect waves in Portugal and that he is considering the possibility of going to the beach where the biggest waves in history were surfed.

The world champion said he traveled to Portugal exclusively because of the much-hyped swell.

Ferreira already surfed Nazaré in January of this year in a medium to large swell. On this occasion, the best in the 2019 WSL ranking will enter a truly giant sea.

The waves were not up to expectations this morning in Nazaré, but in the afternoon there was a clear increase in size. French-Brazilian Michelle Des Boullions caught a giant wave and then Chumbo Chianca did the same with what was surely the biggest wave of the day.

The peak of the swell will arrive at 2:00 a.m., locals said in the broadcast, so the biggest waves are expected to be surfed this afternoon and early tomorrow morning.
