Another milestone in the evolution of Peruvian surfing was written with the inauguration this season of the Peruvian embassy on the North Shore of Hawaii, Casa Tubos. Located in front of the sea, meters from Pipe, Rockies, and Sunset, it is ready to receive Peruvians who participate in the Triple Crown, the Volcom Pipe Pro, and in the training periods prior to each tournament.

Hawaii is the mecca and being comfortable there is key to having good results there, in and out of the championships.

Gabriel Villarán, one of the people responsible for making this idea a reality, spoke with DUKE about the operation, history and some of the rules of this house.

How did the idea of ​​creating a Peruvian house on the North Shore come about?
From the first meetings with the people from Tubos, it was clear that they not only wanted to relaunch the school and professionalize surfing, they were also motivated to support the sport in Peru.

They asked me how they could make it happen, and one of my ideas/proposals was to get a house on the North Shore, so that the InkaTeam can use it as a base in the upcoming seasons and championships of the WSL world circuit.

How will things work during the season? Can any Peruvian go?
For this season, Tubos has approximately 20 weeks, 12 of them for the InkaTeam and 8 weeks for other brands and groups that want to rent it. The InkaTeam weeks are divided into two parts, the first of six weeks, at the beginning of the season, covering the HIC, Haleiwa and Sunset events and the second part, also of six weeks at the beginning of the year, covering the Volcom Pipe Pro and the training prior to the event.

Those competing in these events have priority to get to the house and not everyone can stay during these periods.

Where it is located?
Just a few meters from Ehukai Park, five minutes from Pipeline, oceanfront, on the North Shore of Oahu.

What amenities does it have? How many people can live there at the same time?
The house is small but we have just enough to be comfortable. There are six beds and two sofas, that is, eight warriors in a house!

Who would be the Tai Van Dyke and Kaiborg Garcia of the house?
We don't have a General, we are a family. I am involved with the coordination between the house, the athletes and Tubos.

Any basic rules? Any basic punishments for those who break them?
Respect begets respect.

Why does a surf school sponsor this venture?
Why wouldn't I do it if the purpose of a surf school is to teach and promote the sport in a safe and professional way, with a solid foundation, good technique and above all treating others like family. Everything that Tubos and this house represent.

What is your position/involvement in Tubos Surf School?
At the beginning of this year we started talking, and in a few weeks I officially became part of the Tubos family. Since then we began working on the relaunch/image of the school and advising them on various projects related to surfing.

It is interesting how the school has already sponsored an international event in Pico Alto, they have gone to the CT in France with students and now a house in Hawaii, it is a different school, what do you say?
I don't think it's a different school, I think it's a school that is motivated to do things well.
