It's official: Jordy, Steph and Sally are already in Tokyo 2020
This was just announced by the WSL after today's series at the Quik and Roxy Pro
South Africa's Jordy Smith, Australia's Stephanie Gilmore and Sally Fitzgibbons became the first surfers in history to be officially declared Olympians by the WSL.
Three statements established this, first Jordy, then Stephanie and then Sally, in each one it was made clear that there was no mathematical chance that someone would take their place in the games.
Jordy and Fitzgibbons are still in the running at the Quik and Roxy Pros but Stephanie has been eliminated, meaning there is no Australian woman mathematically able to catch her, the WSL reported.
With this, for the first time in the history of surfing, the final roster of athletes who will debut at the Olympic Games began to fill up.
On social media, none of these three surfers celebrated the event.
It is somewhat strange that Kanoa Igarashi has not been announced, he is sixth and is the only Japanese in contention, it seems practically impossible that he will be left out of Tokyo 2020.
