Italo Ferreira is the new world champion

The player from Baía Formosa defeated the player from Maresias in a 100% Brazilian final and thus achieved the fourth world title for Brazil

Italo Ferreira has just been crowned 2019 world surfing champion in an epic day that brought the final to the last series of the year: The final was against Gabriel Medina and whoever won took the cup.

In waves that were inconsistent but at times epic, Italo had several good ones, did two that were almost 10, but he got the job done as soon as the final began with a tube for Backdoor that gave him 7,83 and set the pace for the rest of the final.

Medina did not stop fighting and looked dangerous until the end but without priority he could not get the bomb down.

The result means that he is only the third Brazilian in history to win a world title, the fourth title for his nation, and the fourth cup to go to that nation in six years on tour.

A Brazilian party broke out on the beach after the locker room confirmed that Ferreira won by 14 (7,83+6,17) to 8,14 (7,77 + 0,37).

Italo could not hold back his tears when he was interviewed, saying that his grandmother had asked him to win before she died and that he had succeeded. He could barely speak while he was testifying.

Courage and consistency on the tubes was key to Italo Ferreira's victory. All photos: WSL
Medina fought hard but did not find the magic that he always has, a key point to win a title.
Medina had said that three titles was what he wanted, he came close but did not achieve it (for now).
Arriving a month early at Pipe and catching giant waves in the middle of the crowd was key for Italo to win at Pipe.
