Italo Ferreira won in Portugal and is the new leader of the ranking
The title definition in Hawaii will be the most disputed in recent years with four contenders depending on themselves
Brazilian Italo Ferreira won the tenth stage of the men's CT thanks to an impeccable game of aerials that knocked out Jordy Smith in the grand final in waves of one to two meters in Peniche, Portugal.
With this result, four surfers will go to the last stage in Pipeline between December 8 and 20, depending on themselves to become world champions.
Italo Ferreira in first with 51070 points, Gabriel Medina in second with 50005 points, Jordy Smith in third with 49985 and Filipe Toledo in fourth with 49145.
This means that if any of them wins at Pipe, they will take home this year's world title regardless of the other's result.
Kolohe Andino has a mathematical chance but he will basically need the previous four to lose by one at Pipe for him to win the event.
Ferreira won the final in the first few minutes, doing an aerial that was worth 10 points and which he backed up shortly after with a high seven, also thanks to an aerial. He then improved, with another aerial and separated himself in the battle. The final score was 18,43 to 6,17 (due to the fact that in the last wave Jordy, who had already given up, made an interference.
In third place, Kanoa Igarashi and Caio Ibelli were tied. The Japanese beat Filipe Toledo earlier (the Brazilian wasted a great chance to go to Pipe with a big advantage). Ibelli, meanwhile, succumbed to Ferreira.
Final results:
1- Italo Ferreira
2- Jordy Smith
3- Kanoa Igarashi and Caio Ibelli
5- Filipe Toledo, Peterson Crisanto, Jack Freestone and Kolohe Andino
