Italo reflects on his behaviour at Bells: “At times I no longer have control”
"I live this sport intensely and anyone who is close to it knows what I am really talking about," he added.
Reigning Olympic champion and 2019 world champion Italo Ferreira has reflected on his attitude at Bells Beach after a narrow quarter-final loss to Jack Robinson, when he slammed his board, swore into the air and went to speak to the judges.
“It wasn’t the first time and it won’t be the last! My team has been amazing all these days, I feel complete inside. I live this sport intensely and whoever is close to it knows what I’m really talking about,” Ferreira wrote on Instagram.
And he added: “At times I no longer have control, I just have to thank God for the opportunity to move forward. 1% opportunity, 99% faith.”
After putting a lot of pressure on Bells' lineup, Italo Ferreira made use of his priority and completed his second best wave of the series with 95 seconds remaining.
With 20 seconds left on the clock Jack Robinson took his wave and executed several maneuvers, causing the Australian fans to explode in applause.
The judges' decision was delayed with Italo Ferreira waiting in the athletes' area and Jack Robinson meditating on the ladder. When the scores came in, it was 6,7 for Ferreira and 7 for Robinson; final result: 14 to 13,8.
Ferreira slammed his board, swore into the air and immediately went to speak to the judges.
After being world champion and having fought with Medina in the 2021 season, Ferreira is not having a good year, sitting in seventh, outside the “final 5” with a third, a fifth, a ninth and a 17th.
