Izzy Elizondo: "I want to be a world surfing champion"
Who is that Panamanian who beats the best groms in the United States at home?
In the last two weeks, the young Panamanian talent Isauro “Izzy” Elizondo won three new titles in the United States, where he First he won the Under 14 and Under 16 categories of the GromSearch and last August 26th won the Under 14 category of the traditional East Coast Surfing Championship.
This is actually nothing new, Elizondo had already previously excelled at events in the United States, what is happening now is that that kid is getting older and gaining renown prior to what will happen to him when he tries to reach the major leagues.
Who is this 14-year-old talent who is beating the youth teams of one of the world's biggest powers at home? Some answers are below.
Where do you live?
I live in Santa Catalina, Panama.
What is your local beach or wave?
My beach is Santa Catalina and La Punta.
What was the key to winning the GromSearch?
The key was that I was focused during the event, focused on watching what was happening in the other heats.
What is your vision of surfing in Panama, what is good about it, what is missing?
My vision is positive, it is progressing more and more. The good thing is that we have two coasts full of quality waves. What is missing is a Federation. I think that the Panamanian Surfing Association has its good and bad things, but mainly it lacks organization and seriousness.
What is your favorite wave in the world?
It's a wave near my house, it's tubular and perfect, but I can't say the name.
How do your parents support you?
My parents are the best thing in my life. Since I was little, they have been supporting me in my career and I am very proud to have them.
You are studying?
Yes, when I'm at home I go to school and when I travel the teachers send me emails to do my homework.
What's the craziest surf trip you've ever been on?
The craziest one was to Los Cabos, Mexico. I went with some of the craziest friends I have and at the end of the trip we got caught in a hurricane.
What do you think about pool waves?
The pools are incredibly nice, but I prefer the natural waves.
What about surfing at the Olympics?
That will give much more recognition to the sport.
What is your ultimate goal?
I want to be a world surfing champion.
Who is your reference or example of surfing in your country?
My example in Panamanian surfing is my father, Javier Elizondo.
