In a close finish to the 2022 ISA World Surfing Games on small waves in Huntington Beach, Team Japan won the men's extra slot for Paris 2024 and Team USA won the women's.
Both places were decided in the grand finals of the championship, basically, whoever won would get the Olympic slot.
Kanoa Igarashi was first, he didn't hesitate throughout the event, he won absolutely every heat he surfed in and the grand final was no different. The Japanese needed to not finish fourth to give Japan the slot, but he wanted to win an event that has eluded him throughout his career.
The final result of the series was as follows:
1st: Kanoa Igarashi with 15,96
2nd: Rio Waida with 14,04
3rd Jackson Baker with 11,67
4th Guilherme Fonseca with 9,36
Men's final ranking:

At the women's level, the 19-year-old Californian Kirra Pinkerton had the responsibility of giving her team the extra slot if she won. She went into the water and did so with a strong squad that included two CTs such as Sally Fitzgibbons and Pauline Ado (former member), as well as the Peruvian Daniella Rosas who was in the final for the second consecutive year.

Pinkerton was efficient in dominating and taking victory. Final women's result:
1st Kirra Pinkerton 13,63
2nd Pauline Ado 13
3rd Sally Fitzgibbons
4th Daniella Rosas
The final result for the women's teams was as follows:

The overall team prize, which was somewhat diminished in importance due to the weight of the extra slots, was won by the United States.
The big loser of the event was Brazil, which finished in sixth place overall; the second best Latin American team was Peru in ninth and the third best was Argentina, in tenth.
