John John's magic board for the finals is the one he used in El Salvador

“I’m basically going to warm up, ride some waves at Lowers before the event and not really need to think about it too much, which is what I feel is the best way to compete,” he said of his strategy for the decisive day.

“A lot of the boards I rode at Lowers are the same ones I rode in El Salvador. My good board is the one I won there on,” said John John Florence in an interview with Surfer magazine ahead of the finals to be held at Lowers from the 6th to the 14th.

In other words, Florence said that she has some new boards but that most of the ones she has saved are those from El Salvador and that the magic one is the victory one.

He also said that after coming back from Tahiti when he surfed Lowers his boards performed the way he thought they would which took a huge weight off his shoulders.

“I’m basically going to warm up, ride some waves at Lowers before the event and not really need to think about it too much, which is what I feel is the best way to compete,” he said of his strategy for the day.

“So far, my idea is just to have good energy. You know, there is the possibility of surfing three times in a row, and three sets in a row can be quite tiring, so I will probably surf in the morning, feel the waves, put my feet in the wax and then have a good rest at home before coming back for my set,” he added.

“I feel like there’s no need to think too much about it. I mean, I understand that there are probably a lot more people and things going on around the event there, so I feel like I’m a little bit more mentally prepared for that. But for the most part, I just kind of calm my mind and keep it simple and just surf the best I can.

Another of Florence’s iconic quotes from the interview was: “Physically I feel great. Mentally, I feel great. The boards feel great.”

Florence comes to Lowers ranked No. 1 and will face the winner of the series between Griffin Colapinto and whoever comes from Jack Robinson, Ethan Ewing and Italo Ferreira.
