John John Florence will attempt to sail around the world in 2026 with his sailboat Vela, he said today in his post about his repeated withdrawal from the world tour.

“We’ve decided to follow that path in 2026: Cross oceans, push my own surfing, become a better husband and father, and try to circumnavigate the globe while facing all the challenges that entails,” the Hawaiian said.

Florence has traveled to different corners of the planet but never attempted to go around the world.

For John John: “Last year, exploring with my family reminded me why I fell in love with surfing. New places, new waves, waking up early and discovering everything together. Almost every day we woke up excited to see what the future held.”

“This means I won’t be competing full-time on the Tour this year. I’m grateful to the WSL for their support. This isn’t a retirement, just continuing down a different path for now. We’re excited to keep filming and sharing the experience in the series we’ll be launching soon,” he concluded.

The messages to John John in his post are all supportive; it is repeated in many cases that this is the "real dream tour".
