Peruvian free surfer Jonathan Gubbins, one of the most renowned tube riders in the world, has just signed a sponsorship with the Californian brand Vissla, ending a multi-year relationship with Billabong.

Thus, he joins his colleagues in tubes Gabriel Villarán and Toto de Romaña as part of the Peruvian team of the brand and Jhony Corzo, Tomás King, Andro Crvik and Isauro Elizondo, among others, as part of the Hispanic-American team.

“I was at a point where I needed to grow. I spoke with Gabriel Villaran and Franz Tomasevich, they gave me the opportunity to make the connection with Vissla International and close the project,” Gubbins told DUKE.

“It is a brand with a very clear ideology, it is purely focused on surfing. In addition to having a strong commitment to free surfing, to our lifestyle. Its designs, clothing, marketing are incredible, it is a growing brand and I like being part of it, feeling important. It is the big step that I needed, and it was founded by perhaps the best CEO Billabong ever had, Paul Naude,” he added.

Speaking about his plans ahead, he said: “The idea and my goals are to focus on some of the best tubes in the world Teahupo'o, Skeleton Bay, Desert, Kandui and maybe add Western Australia and Ireland. Create and innovate,” he said, alluding to the brand's motto.

Gubbins is 39 years old and has been the star of countless surfing clips and films. After posting his latest video, several media outlets asked: “Is Jonathan Gubbins the most surfed human alive?”
