Jordy accuses Medina of having interfered with him "deliberately"
The South African and the Brazilian engaged in one of the most intense paddling battles in WSL history
Jordy Smith and Gabriel Medina starred in another tense moment on CT cameras today, during heat 3 of round 4 of Corona Bali Protected, the fifth stage of the tour taking place in Keramas, Bali.
Coming back from surfing a long wave, with Jordy surfing the next one, the South African wanted to regain priority and cut his wave next to Medina, which started one of the most passionate paddling battles in the history of the sport.
The two surfers paddled very close together and there was contact, they paddled with heart and soul, Smith raised an arm to indicate that something did not seem right to him, but the race continued.
The battle was ultimately won by the South African giant with the longest wingspan in the event and Medina not only lost the rowing but also the championship.
Upon exiting the water, Smith said in the interview: “That got me fired up. We were paddling and he pulled my leg first and I was like, ‘OK, that’s an accident,’ then a second time and then I was like, ‘that’s deliberate. ’”
A new wave of comments on social media and in the comments sections began, pointing out that the same thing always happens with Medina and that he plays dirty. Meanwhile, the defenders of the Brazilian world champion say that the Brazilian plays the game and that in a row like that there will always be friction.
Two years ago, at a free surf in Cloudbreak, Fiji, Medina went down a wave that had Jordy on the peak. Jordy threw his board over his head and they argued passionately afterwards. Medina argued that Jordy had paddled out the previous one and had not gone and that therefore that wave belonged to him.
These two have a nice history of rivalries.
Meanwhile, the quarterfinals for women and men were decided in perfect and very fun waves. They were as follows:
