One of the biggest swells in history hit Teahupoo yesterday and the locals made it their home by riding two of the most incredible waves ever surfed there and around the world.
First it was Kauli Vaast who wanted to abort the mission in the middle of the journey.
Local Hemiti Fierro said, and showed the video (see below), that Kali's wave "was so big that it destroyed houses."
Matahi Drollet then waited, according to photographer Tim McKenna, nine hours to catch what appears to have been the swell wave, at 17:00 p.m. yesterday, August 13.
Today, Drollet shared how the dock on the shore had broken and several houses had been flooded.
"It was all worth it," he said.
