Kelly Slater was not hesitant about what's next in his life on tour, as he usually is from event to event, and when asked by WSL reporter AJ McCord about the event in Portugal, he spoke freely without any mysteries.

He didn't say he'd be 100% sure or anything, but he did say the waves were fine. Commentator Strider Wasilewski said: “It looks like Slater will be in Portugal and that always counts,” he said on the live stream.

Slater has stated that he wants to go to the games and so his attitude to the question was so different from the usual mystery: “We’ll see, we were quite unlucky last year with the waves after a month of perfect swells in Supertubos and when we arrived, it closed and we surfed the first round in garbage onshore wind… It turned into an aerial championship. But we had a day and a half of good waves which was fun.”

He added: “At this time of year you would expect to have good waves but to be honest both the Pacific and the Atlantic have been weird the last few weeks so we will see what happens.”

One of the interesting points of the interview with Slater was the change in the way surfing has taken place at Sunset. He said that Tom Curren, Tom Carroll and Gary Elkerton, when he started competing here, would go outside to wait for the bomb and that today everything is decided on the inside of the wave.
