La Palma volcano made the best wave on the island disappear
"The best in La Palma and without a doubt one of the best in the Canary Islands," said the president of the Canary Islands federation, Ángel Lobo, on the disappearance of Los Guirres.

Los Guirres, "the best in La Palma and certainly one of the best in the Canary Islands" disappeared in recent days when lava from the Cumbre Vieja volcano entered the Atlantic Ocean last Thursday, reported the Spanish newspaper El Mundo, citing the president of the Canary Islands federation, Ángel Lobo.
"Of the 118 kilometres of coastline on La Palma, the lava fell right there," the authority added, according to the note. And he added: "This was a sports facility that is listed in the national census, just like the Bernabéu, but it was also very special: it had three or four peaks on the seabed, at different distances above the rock reef which, being oriented west-northwest, created a great swell from September to April."
"It was a magical wave, truly magical. And not even the wind changed it: it was protected by the cliffs, which sheltered it. It was the perfect beach for all types of surfers, because it was shallow, which is why the lava is depositing so quickly there. Personally, I have wonderful memories there. You would go 100 metres inland and catch a wave by yourself, it was wonderful. As president of the federation, we held five Canary Islands championships there, which were great, because many people from the area came, they set up food stalls, there were bands playing... Many times only the competitors and their families come to our championships. The whole town comes there. Well, they came," Lobo concludes, according to El Mundo.
The Spanish surfing federation paid tribute to the wave: “We want to pay a heartfelt tribute to the wave of Los Guirres and its people, so that their memories always remain alive,” sharing a photo gallery.
The Cumbre Vieja volcano erupted 15 days ago and its lava has swept away nearly a thousand houses.
