Leticia Canales and Vicente Romero won the Siroko Super League
And they are the new unofficial professional champions of Spain
Leticia Canales and Vicente Romero were crowned champions of the grand final stage of the Super Liga Siroko yesterday; with this they took home the 2018 title of unofficial professional champions of Spanish surfing and each of them added 6000 euros to their accounts.
In the stage held this weekend on San Lorenzo beach only the 12 best in the previous three stages competed, the winner would take the circuit regardless of what had happened previously.
Leticia Canales, who was not ranked well, left everything on the court, beating the number one player on the circuit, Garazi Sánchez, in the quarterfinals to continue to move ahead and beat Iara Domínguez in the grand final of the tournament by 13,17 to 11,7.
On the men's side, Andy Criere, who arrived as the favourite, surprisingly lost in round 1 to Miguel Betegón and Juanjo Fernández, and then failed to beat Julen Eguiguren. This left the door open for the rest of the competitors and Vicente Romero took advantage: He averaged more than 13 points in all his series and closed his participation in a final that he won by 14,16 to 9,5 against Ethan Eguiguren.
“Very happy to win the Super Liga Siroko 2018!” Romero wrote on his Instagram. “It is the highest level national event and the best prizes we have,” he added, pointing out that he used a board that he tested the day before and that was the one that ended up giving him the victory.
Canales said: “After a year of hard work to give my all in competition... I have achieved first place in San Lorenzo, a lucky place for me. I have competed against very good people, who have not made things easy for me. The final was very close and I would like to congratulate Iara Domínguez for the great year she has had and the powerful surfing she has shown during the championship.”
Canales added that he was grateful to the Siroko brand “for making the best circuit at a national level, for the organization and the quality of the judges.”
