Lucas Chumbo Chianca dominated day 1 at El Gringo

The Latin Pipe pumped solid two-meter tubes. The Japanese Takuto Ohta left the hospital injured, went into the water and won his series

Brazilian Lucas “Chumbinho” Chianca, fifth on the big wave world tour,  who missed the swell of the decade in Fiji by coming to surf in Arica, made his decision count and was the best surfer of the first day of the Maui and Sons Arica Pro Tour, QS 3000 that is taking place in the tubes of El Gringo.

There were 11 series on the first day of the event, in none of which did the competitors manage to score more than 10 points. Chianca only needed to go into the water to score 15,33 (after getting out of two tubes).

Chianca told DUKE that in these two days he forgot about having missed the Fiji swell with the tubes he had done in these two days.

Round 1 was completed and three sets of round 2 were done. Mexican Sasha Donnanno used all the knowledge he brings from Puerto Escondido to tube with class and get into round 3 with the second best score of the day (8,26 = 6,33 + 1,93).

One of the big surprises of the day was the Japanese Takuto Ohta, who after being hospitalized in a critical condition after hitting his chest, decided to get into the water to compete in one of the heaviest waves in the world.

He was fourth throughout the series until a heavy right came in, he made a good barrel that he completed with a maneuver and thus went from last to first. He left the young Kael Walsh in second, the Portuguese Miguel Blanco in third and the local Diego Medina in fourth.

The third best performance of the day was by the young local Roberto Ilufín, who scored 8,03 after finding the way out of a tube that was worth 6,8. In the following series, incredibly, the local lost needing 0,8.

Sasha Donnanno brought his experience as a Puerto Escondido local to the table and made the second best score of the day, making it through two rounds and already securing himself some dollars. All photos: Johannes Bock
Leo Acevedo from Pichilemu always shows a lot of class at El Gringo. Today was no exception and he finished his series in first place.
Argentine Martín Passeri passed his series thanks to two good tubes.
Ecuador's Cabezón Goncalves did not have the best of his series in round 1 and was eliminated.
Another Ecuadorian, Israel Barona, competed well and managed to continue in the tournament.
Young local talent Danilo Cerda made it to round 2 thanks to a couple of good tubes.
Legendary Pichilemino, Diego Medina, found the waves in round 1 but not in round 2 and had to say goodbye to the event.
The waves were good and they say they will be even better tomorrow. With more size and better direction.
