Lucca Mesinas' feat to get into Mexico's CT
One of the Latin surfers who is currently having the best moments, shared how he managed to get into the test, his feelings for having achieved it and what he did in the lead-up.
An intelligent surfer in and out of the water, Lucca Mesinas was surprised that surfers below his level and ranking were invited to the Surf Ranch event.
With the education that characterizes him but also with the respect that he commands, he sent an email to the WSL letting them know of his disagreement with what happened, the Peruvian told DUKE.
“I have been bothering for a while because Surf Ranch and Mexico are my region. Remember that I race in the North American region and I am in the top 3 there. At first I was a little upset because they didn't put me in Surf Ranch and they put several others, 1, 2, 4 and a bunch of wildcards,” said Lucca.
“I sent them an email asking why they didn’t put me in and they explained that the hell with the sponsors and all that… I told them that if there was an opportunity in Mexico it would be incredible if they could give it to me. Two days before I left Japan for California I sent them another email, telling them that I had just finished fifth, that I feel like I’m racing well, at a good level and that it would be incredible if they gave me the opportunity in Mexico again. I also mentioned that I knew there were several people who weren’t going to go, like John John, Julian, Jordy,” he added.
“They told me I had to wait and the day before I left they sent me an email saying I could go. Everything was incredible (laughs). I am super happy, super content. I am settled in, today I am going to try the wave, I have never been to this part of Mexico, it is super nice. Now I am going to try the boards, the wave and see what happens,” the Peruvian concluded.
Mesinas comes from placing fifth in Tokyo 2020, qualifying for the challengers thanks to a third place in his region without needing to compete in the last stage, won the global Surf Web Series and is always a standout in free surfing sessions.
The Peruvian will face Jadson Andre and Griffin Colapinto in his round 1 series.
