Lucca Mesinas: “More than pressure, I felt happiness and motivation to take advantage of the great opportunity of being here”

After making it to round 3 of the Mexico CT, the Peruvian spoke with DUKE about his series and the one to come

Lucca Mesinas is on an incredible run, placing fifth in Tokyo 2020, securing a third place in the Challengers in the North American regional, winning the world final of the Surf Web Series, and now he has become the first Peruvian man in history to pass a CT series.

As always, he was calculated, he was effective, he was consistent and he was measured when it came to choosing waves and competing. He proved once again that beating him is not easy, no matter who you are.

Below are some words from the Peruvian after leaving his series.

How do you feel about having finished the series?
I'm happy to get through the heat, the waves were great, it was a huge blast, they kept coming. Still, it was important to choose the best ones, because there were several that started well but then ended up without a wall; or there were some that started badly and then got good.

I am happy to have made good strategies and to have passed.

How did you feel throughout the day from when you woke up until the series started?
I felt good in terms of preparation, everything, from the morning. We are in a hotel that is an hour away, so we had to get up early and I went to free surf before. It was very difficult to catch waves because there were a lot of CT surfers at that time trying to catch waves too.

More than anything, I took it as a normal championship, like any other championship. The classic thing of warming up before going into the water, getting into the sea and all that.

"I took it like a normal championship, like any other championship. The classic thing of warming up before going into the water, getting into the sea and all that."

Did you feel the pressure of being in a CT?
Not much, anyway, I was thinking that I was racing my first CT and all that; but more than pressure, I felt happiness and motivation to take advantage of the great opportunity to be here with the best surfers in the world, on the tour, on an incredible wave and, nothing, grateful for this opportunity and as I have always said: You have to take advantage of them, that is what you have to focus on the most.

The series got a little tighter at the end, did you get nervous?
Yes, but I didn't really hear how my heat was going, it was very difficult for me, I didn't know what position I was in. So I practically ran my whole heat without knowing what position I was in.

I was thinking of waiting for the good times and I had my watch to know how much time was left.

I tried to wait for the good ones, and since I didn't know what position I was in, every wave I rode, I rode it as if I needed a good score.

Now you're going to face one-on-one against one of the top seeds, what's the plan?
In any case, I'm going to play against someone who is at the top and it's not going to be easy at all. I have to continue with the strategy of catching good waves, surfing maybe a little calmer, more relaxed and go for some maneuvers that I can do that are good and continue doing a good job.

To give it hard and leave everything in the water, I think that is the most important thing in the end.

"To give it all and leave it all in the water, I think that is the most important thing in the end"

You've already guaranteed yourself a $9.000 prize. Do you have any plans for that money? Are you going to treat yourself?
I haven't thought much about the money, but I think it will be very useful to continue doing the challenger series. There are four events coming up in faraway countries and I have to save that money to continue travelling to compete and train, getting a coach and all that.
