Lucca Mesinas is the new WSL North American champion

He became the first Peruvian in history to achieve this title after Kevin Schulz failed to achieve it in Barbados.

Peruvian Lucca Mesinas became the first surfer from his country in history to win the title of WSL North American regional champion, after his main rivals fell without being able to overcome him in the last qualifying event that ended today in Barbados.

Kevin Schulz of California was the closest, needing to reach the grand final and losing in the quarterfinals.

The ranking left Messinas in first place as follows:

To win, Mesinas won two tournaments, one in Acapulco and another in Barbados, he placed third in Florida and Costa Rica and ninth in Pismo Beach, California. He then went to Hawaii, so he could not defend his place in Barbados. The numbers worked out and he won the historic title.

Of the regions of the globe, the North American region is a hotly contested one, with Messinas' title previously won by Puerto Rico's Brian Toth in 2015, the United States' Kilian Garland in 2016 and Jordy Collins in 2017.

In addition to the prestige of winning it, it gives Messinas the right to enter the highest level QSs without needing a ranking, which is not a problem for him because he is ranked 48th.
