Peruvian Lucca Mesinas finished in fifth place in the Billabong Pipe Pro, stage 1 of the 2022 CT, taking an important step towards reaching the second half of the year and guaranteeing his reclassification in the 2023 elite.
In the quarterfinals he was unable to beat the Brazilian Miguel Pupo in what was a slow series that had seven waves being surfed and was decided by 8,1 (6,5+1,6) to 6 (5+1).
Pupo caught the best wave of the series when priority was in Mesinas' hands and received a 6,5. The Peruvian then regained priority to get a good tube and needed a 3 until the series ended.
Mesinas took a left that closed in on him, then he took a series to the head and almost asked for assistance for what was supposedly cuts on the reef, but he decided to paddle out to look for more waves.
With this result, Messinas starts the year in fifth place with 4745 points.
