Lucca Mesinas won in Montañita and continues his good streak
Gato Chila and Mimi Barona took third place on the podium; Silvana Lima won the women's division
Peruvian Lucca Mesinas added a new QS victory to his resume today after winning the Montañita Open, a tournament that marked the return of the world tour to Ecuador after 15 years.
In a tight final series against Brazilian Eduardo Groggia, Mesinas made the difference when, 10 minutes into his series, he found a perfect opening forehand, in which he connected with an extremely strong opening maneuver and then continued to combine good maneuvers.
Groggia finished the series needing 8,61.
In the semi-finals, Messinas had beaten another Brazilian, Marcos Correa. Groggia, for his part, did the same to the local star, Jonathan Gato Chila Zambrano.
In fifth place in the tournament was Ignacio Gundensen from Argentina who had a good performance in the tournament.
Mesinas had just secured his place in Tokyo 2020 after finishing in the top 10 at the ISA World Championships in El Salvador and showed that he is still on the right foot in the championships ahead of the QS in Salinas and then the debut of surfing at the Olympic Games.
Among the ladies, Mimi Barona made the house respect her until the semis, when she met the eventual winner of the event, Silvana Lima, who added 15,55 in that series.
Also performing well in the championship were Peruvian Sol Aguirre and Argentine Josefina Ané, who both finished in fifth place.
In the women's final, Silvana Lima defeated former world junior champion Summer Macedo by 14 to 11,75.
The challengers are classified by means of the regional ranking of the best 10 men and the best five women in South America.
The women's ranking has not yet been updated. Here is the men's ranking:
