Peruvians María Fernanda Reyes and Arena Rodríguez were crowned South American WSL champions yesterday in Huanchaco, the organization reported in a press release.
With this, Mafer earned reclassification to the longboard CT and Arena a place in the junior world championship that is taking place in January in California.
Reyes competed for the title in the grand final against Brazilian Luana Soares and won by 9,27 to 8,14.
“I am super happy and excited. It is the first time I have won this South American circuit and it was a very important title for me, especially here in Huanchaco, which is my second home. I am super happy that the cup stayed here at home and also that I qualified to compete in the entire World Tour, so I am happy and excited. The conditions today were difficult to be able to show my surfing, but I am happy to be able to win and that the title is at home,” said Mafer.
Meanwhile, in the junior women's category, Arena Rodríguez guaranteed herself the title in advance by making it to the grand final where she once again faced Catalina Zariquiey, as in the previous stage in Lobitos, but this time she took the victory. She won by 10,40 (5,40+5,00) to 6,87.
“I am very happy for the opportunity to win this stage here in Huanchaco and also for the South American Pro Junior title. I had come to these two events with this goal and I am very happy to have achieved it. Catalina (Zariquiey) was killing it every day, as were all the girls from Peru and Chile and Ecuador, who also came here. I prepared a lot in the preseason every day, I worked hard and I am happy with the results I achieved. I reached the final of the four stages, I won three, so I am super happy,” said Arena.
As there are two places qualifying for the junior world championship, the second South American member will be defined in November in Punta Rocas when the last stage of the junior tour takes place. Catalina Zariquiey is second with Kalea Gervasi third.
Finally, in the men's longboard category, the stage victory went to Piccolo Clemente, who rose in the rankings but did not make it to the South American spot in the longboard CT (although he can receive it as a wildcard).
The day before, Friday, Brazilian Alexandre Escobar had won the South American title in advance and thus also qualified for the longboard CT.
Just like last week in Lobitos, Ryan Kainalo took the only non-Peruvian victory in the event. He beat Cauet Frazao in the grand final.
