Miguel Tudela's historic achievement forced us to take a look at the surfing history books, which are not abundant online, and to consult the legends of the sport as well. Magoo de la Rosa told DUKE that he competed in the Pipe Masters in 86, 87, 88 and 90.

According to DUKE's review of the WSL archive and the surfing encyclopedia, there were no Peruvians between 71 and 84 and almost no Latin Americans. The Brazilians Pepe Lopes and Rico de Souza are the two that appear on the lists.

“More than any particular anecdote, it was the dream I had since I was a kid!” Magoo told DUKE.

“When all my friends and I used to watch videos of the Pipe Masters finals back in the late 70s and early 80s, it featured monsters like Mark Richards, Dane Kaaloha, Tom Caroll, Shaun Thosom, Gerry Lopez and many others,” Magoo explains.

“I dreamed that one day I would run it and that dream came true in 1986 when I was already living on the North Shore. I also had the opportunity to run it in the following years 87, 88 and 90,” he adds.

“For me, the Pipe Masters is the most prestigious championship in the world of surfing, because of its history and everything that this special place represents. I am proud and happy to have represented Peruvian surfing on this very special course during that beautiful time that I had the chance to live on the islands,” concludes the Peruvian.
