Hawaiian Barron Mamiya and Australian Tyler Wright won the Pipe Pro yesterday on a day of perfect, slightly sluggish waves at Backdoor.
Mamiya repeated his consecutive victory, he had won last year beating John John in the final and this time he beat the Italian Leo Fioravanti who made it to the final again.
The result was as close as it gets: 17,97 to 17,97, breaking the tie for the best wave, which was 9,8.
A completely different reality was experienced by the ladies, who finished with a score of 7,7 for Wright and 3,94 for Caitlin Simmers.
The Australian returned to win at Pipe after four years.
Both Mamiya and Wright will travel to Stage 2 in Abu Dhabi from February 14-16 in yellow jersey.
Earlier in the day, Costa Rican Brisa Hennessy, the only Spanish speaker present on the final day of the event, was unable to beat Australian Molly Picklum and said goodbye with a decent quarter-final result and starting the year in fifth place.
