Manny Resano and those achievements outside of championships that are as important or more important than winning one
Surfing things
Manny Resano has no sponsors, does not compete on the world tour and has no plans to do so. According to various media reports, he is a sailing instructor and earns a living from that and takes care of his family of three daughters.
He hasn't won any major championships recently, but his resounding achievement of climbing the Mavericks lineup ladder is as important as winning a CT, a world title, or even more so, for sure for Manny.
There is no $100.000 prize money, but there is the utmost respect of being one of the best on one of the heaviest waves on the planet, the one that claimed the lives of two greats like Mark Foo and Sion Miloski.
And coming from the bottom, from the bottom, from Argentina and Nicaragua, without knowing anyone, just putting in talent and hard work to be there and get the biggest ones, is something huge that not just anyone can achieve.
Two facts have been made public in recent days that confirm Resano's rise: Mavericks local, Luca Padua, named him as one of the top five "unknowns (by underground)" in the wave: "Manny is the definition of that person who does it because he loves it," said the Californian.
The other was the segment in the new film “Next Level” from Powerlines Productions, which has basically filmed everything that has happened at Mavericks since Jeff Clark convinced the Santa Cruz surfers to accompany him to that dreaded wave.
In his speech, Resano, drinking mate, makes clear the desire and sacrifice he made the day he was introduced to the world on December 7, 2015. He went in with his brother, lost the board, then his brother also lost it. They had to go out to look for them and go back in. It took him an hour and a half to get out there and half an hour later he paddled a bomb that painted the horizon black. He did not hesitate, he went down with his heart and did it.
It was the wave of the day at Surfline, nominated for the WSL Big Wave Awards and, probably what mattered most to Manny: He earned a tiny spot at Mavericks.
Then, the following season he did it again, with some incredible performances also on the dreaded left. This put him in pole position to enter the wave championship, the Titans of Mavericks, which unfortunately had to declare bankruptcy and was never held again.
The place in the lineup of this Argentine and Nicaraguan has now become larger.
And the most interesting thing is that Manny probably doesn't care about the segment, the nominations, the wave at Surfline, or even this article. He wants to be in the water early with his peers and, of course, to know that they have accepted him as a fellow member.
That's worth a CT, and to him, it's worth more.
