Chilean Manuel Selman won his home championship, the Cabarete Pro, which took place on the waves of Playa Encuentro between Friday and Sunday.

Born in Chile but raised in the Dominican Republic, Selman grew up on the waves of Encuentro and in the interview after the victory he stated that knowing the wave was definitely key to the victory.

In the grand final he met the outstanding Florida surfer, Evan Geiselman, and dominated, scoring 14,67 (8+6,67) against 8,77 (5,07+3,7).

“It’s amazing,” Manuel said. “All the love and support I felt in every series… I’ve been doing this for so long and to achieve my first final and win on home soil is amazing.”

Manuel had beaten Nolan Rapoza in the semi-finals and David do Carmo in the quarter-finals.

Mexican Alan Cleland also had an outstanding performance, finishing 13th in the tournament.

The North American leg of the QS continues next week in Cocoa Beach, Florida.

That backside attack on a wave he knows very well was one of the keys to victory.
