Marco Mignot won in Sopela and took the lead in the ranking
Spaniards Diego Suárez and Iara Domínguez were runners-up. Despite an early defeat, Nadia Erostarbe remains the leader in the women's category
Everything was going well for young French talent Justin Becret until the fifth stage of the European youth tour was confirmed in Sopela and Marco Mignot caught wind in his shirt with his entry to the grand final of the Young Guns in Kelly's pool.
The Mexican of French descent continued on his way: He saw that his main rival Becret fell yesterday in round 4 and left the door open; today Mignot did not forgive, he won the championship and took the lead in the ranking that will now decide champions in Pantín, Galicia between August 24 and 26.
In second place was Diego Suárez from the Canary Islands, who with this result will enter the top 10 (he was 27th). The result of the final was 15,67 vs 10,44.
Another Spanish player who stood out was Sean Gunning, who reached the semi-finals and lost to the man who would go on to win the tournament. Meanwhile, the Basque player Adur Amatriain and the Canary Islander Paolo Giorgi reached the quarter-finals, adding good points to the ranking.
The victory among the ladies went to the Frenchwoman Neis Lartigue who beat Iara Domínguez from San Sebastián in second place by 13,4 to 7,57.
The event was a great success for Israeli Anat Lelior, who finished third and added points to get closer to second place after the early defeat of Spaniards Melania Suárez and Nadia Erostarbe in round 3 (because she was injured and could not continue in the tournament). However, as the four best of six stages are added, Erostarbe remains the leader, with Lelior in second and Suárez in third.
Also standing out, the Canarians Lucía Machado and Laura de los Reyes came in fifth place.
The European champions and qualifiers for the World Cup will be decided between 23 and 25 August in Pantín. The WSL has announced that it will be a special tournament but no details have been given about who will participate.
